Plumbers use PVC solvent cement for unthreaded socket joints. For threaded PVC connections, they use PVC-compatible thread seal tape or joint compound. The correct product must suit the pipe material, joint type and plumbing application.
Socket joints: PVC solvent cement
PVC solvent cement softens the mating surfaces of the pipe and fitting so they fuse into a permanent solvent-weld joint. It is not an ordinary surface sealant, and applying silicone, epoxy or cement over the outside does not create a sound joint.
Choose cement approved for the specific PVC system. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for pipe size, pressure or non-pressure use, operating conditions and potable-water suitability where relevant. Product colour or the general label “PVC cement” does not establish suitability; required certification, including WaterMark where applicable, should match the plumbing application.
PVC primer cleans and conditions the mating surfaces to support solvent welding. It does not seal the joint by itself. Whether it is required depends on the pipe system, cement and applicable installation requirements, so follow the current product instructions.
Solvent cement and primer are flammable and may produce hazardous vapours. Follow the label and safety data sheet for ventilation and protective equipment, and keep the products away from ignition sources. Joint assembly, testing and repairs should be left to an appropriately licensed plumber where required.
Threaded PVC connections
Threaded PVC fittings require thread seal tape or joint compound specifically approved for PVC, not solvent cement. Confirm compatibility with the plastic, pressure, temperature, conveyed fluid and potable-water use where relevant.
Some compounds can damage plastic, while overtightening may split female PVC fittings. Follow both manufacturers’ instructions rather than using a universal tightening or tape-wrap rule.
