Why can an undermount sink come loose?
An undermount sink must support its own weight as well as water, dishes and connected fittings. The required installation method varies by sink and benchtop manufacturer and may use adhesive, clips, brackets or another specified support system. Sealant that keeps water out of the joint should not be assumed to provide structural support.
Common causes include:
- poorly prepared mounting surfaces
- unsuitable, incorrectly applied or deteriorated adhesive
- missing, loose, corroded or misplaced clips or brackets
- cracking, water damage or deterioration around the benchtop
- excessive loading or someone leaning on the sink
- pipework straining a sink that has already begun to move.
Even a small gap or slight movement needs attention. Continued use can worsen the separation, damage the benchtop or strain the waste and water connections.
Warning signs and immediate action
Warning signs include movement when lightly touched, a widening gap below the benchtop, sagging, creaking, separating sealant or water entering the cabinet.
- Stop using, filling or loading the sink.
- If safe, remove items from the cabinet without leaning on the sink or disturbing the pipework.
- If a tap or supply connection is leaking, close an accessible isolation valve only if you can reach it safely. If water leaks only while draining, stop using the sink.
- Keep clear of an unstable sink. Do not work beneath it, prop it up or attempt to reattach it yourself.
