### Turn off the isolation valve under the sink

Most kitchen and vanity taps have a small isolation (mini-stop) valve on the water line beneath the basin. Turn it clockwise to shut the water to that tap only, so the drip stops and the rest of the house keeps running. If there’s no isolation valve, that’s fine; move to the next step.

### A drip isn’t harmless; it’s money down the sink

A tap dripping once a second wastes roughly 20,000 litres a year; enough to fill a small pool, and it shows up on your water bill. A steady stream from a tap that won’t shut off wastes far more. The drip also tells you a part is failing, and small worn parts have a habit of becoming split spindles and flooded cabinets if they’re ignored.

We treat a drip as a fault to diagnose, not a nuisance to muffle; so you stop paying for wasted water and avoid the bigger repair down the track.

### Know your tap type; it decides the fix

Traditional taps use a rubber washer on a spindle; when it perishes, the tap drips and usually needs a re-washer. Quarter-turn and single-lever mixer taps use ceramic disc cartridges; when they wear or crack, the tap spits, stiffens or leaks and needs a new cartridge, not a washer. Fitting a washer to a cartridge tap (or vice versa) is why so many DIY fixes fail.

### If new washers keep dripping, blame the seat

The washer presses onto a brass ring called the valve seat. Years of grit and over-tightening scores and pits that seat, so even a brand-new washer can’t seal against it; the tap drips again within days. This is the single most common reason a DIY washer swap doesn’t hold.

We inspect and re-cut or re-seat the valve seat as part of a proper re-washer, so the new washer meets a smooth surface and actually stops the drip.

### High water pressure is a silent tap-killer

Much of Sydney runs at mains pressure well above what tapware is designed for. Excess pressure hammers washers, splits cartridges and makes taps drip again soon after a repair; it also stresses hoses and the hot water system. The maximum for most fixtures is 500 kPa, and plenty of homes sit far higher.

We test your mains pressure while we’re there and, if it’s over spec, recommend a pressure-limiting valve; the cheapest way to make every tap and appliance in the house last longer.

### Repair or replace? It depends on the tap

A good-quality tap with a worn washer or cartridge is almost always worth repairing; the part is inexpensive and the body is sound. But a cheap or badly corroded tap, one with a seized body, or an old style you can no longer get parts for, is often better replaced; a repair that won’t hold is false economy. Age, condition and parts availability decide it.

Is my tap a washer type or a ceramic cartridge type?

A traditional tap uses a rubber washer and needs a re-washer when it drips; a quarter-turn or single-lever mixer uses a ceramic disc cartridge and needs that replaced. A good plumber will tell you which you have and why it’s leaking before quoting.

Yes; you should insist on it. A scored or pitted valve seat is the top reason a new washer drips again within days. Re-cutting or re-seating it as part of the repair is what makes the fix actually hold.

Will you test my water pressure while you’re here?

You should ask for it. High mains pressure destroys washers and cartridges and makes repairs fail early. A pressure test takes minutes, and fitting a limiter if it’s too high is the cheapest way to protect every tap and appliance.

Should I repair this tap or replace it?

It depends on the tap. A sound, good-quality tap is usually worth repairing; a corroded, seized or parts-unavailable tap is often better replaced. We give an honest call based on age, condition and cost, not on what suits us.

### Can I fix a leaking tap myself?

You can swap a washer on a simple, isolated tap if you’re confident, but most drips that “come back” are down to a scored valve seat, high water pressure or the wrong part; things DIY usually misses. Mains-connected tap repairs are also licensed work in NSW. If a washer swap hasn’t held, it needs a plumber.

### Why does my tap keep dripping even after a new washer?

### How long does it take to repair a leaking tap?

Most single tap repairs are done in 30 to 60 minutes, because we carry washers, O-rings, jumper valves and common ceramic cartridges on the truck. Re-cutting a valve seat or fitting new tapware takes a little longer, and we’ll tell you the timeframe when we quote, before any work begins.

### What’s the difference between a washer tap and a mixer?

A traditional tap uses a rubber washer on a spindle and drips when the washer perishes; it needs a re-washer. A mixer or quarter-turn tap uses a ceramic disc cartridge and spits, stiffens or leaks when the cartridge wears; it needs a new cartridge. We identify yours on-site and fit the right part.

### Why is water leaking from the base of my mixer tap?

A leak from the base or the spout join, rather than the outlet, usually means a perished O-ring or a failed cartridge seal, not a washer. It’s a common, quick fix once the tap is opened up. Note where the water appears and we’ll bring the right parts to sort it on the first visit.

### Can high water pressure cause my taps to leak?

Yes; it’s one of the most overlooked causes. Pressure above around 500 kPa hammers washers and splits cartridges, so taps drip again soon after repair. We test your mains pressure and can fit a pressure-limiting valve, which protects every tap, hose and appliance in the home.
