## The team that has installed 1,500+ hot water systems across Sydney

Sydney hot water install specialists

We are not a generalist plumber who fits the occasional unit. Hot water is core to what we do, so the advice is impartial, the sizing is done from manufacturer tables, and the install is tidy, compliant and rebate-ready from day one.

Founded in 2010 by owner Steven Bahbah, our family-run team has planned and fitted new hot water systems across greater Sydney, from a first-time install in a Bondi renovation to a planned electric-to-heat-pump upgrade in Mosman. Every install is run by a fully ticketed plumber and gas fitter under NSW Licence 305428C, ends with a Certificate of Compliance, and shows the rebate value on day one, not as a promise to chase later.

## 4 things to check before you choose a new hot water system

Before you buy

A little prep before you install saves money for a decade. Work through these four checks; then use the enquiry form or comparison tool below and we’ll confirm everything on a free on-site visit.

Switching to or from gas? Read this first.

Any new gas hot water install, gas conversion, or decommissioning of an old gas unit must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Incorrect flue clearances, undersized gas lines or a capped line left unsafe are serious hazards. If you smell gas at any point, do not switch anything electrical on or off, leave the area, and call **000** or your gas provider. For a compliant gas hot water install, call us on 1800 349 338.

New heat pump and electric installs may need a dedicated circuit or off-peak wiring; we confirm the electrical requirements on your on-site quote so there are no surprises.

1800 349 338

[Talk to a hot water installer now](tel:1800-349-338)

### Count the people and the peak demand

Sizing is driven by how many people live in the home and how much hot water is used at once (two showers plus the dishwasher, for example), not by what unit was there before. As a Sydney rule of thumb, allow around 50 litres of storage per person, or a 26L/min continuous flow unit for households of four or more. Getting this right is the single biggest factor in whether a new system runs out in winter.

### Check what fuel is actually available

Confirm whether you have mains natural gas, LPG bottles, or electric only. Continuous flow and gas storage need a gas connection and correct flue clearances; electric and heat pump need only power; solar needs unshaded, correctly-oriented roof space. The best system on paper is no use if the connection is not there, so this shapes your shortlist first.

[Ask us what your property supports](https://fixedtoday.com.au/contact-us)

### Find the right spot; indoor vs outdoor

Storage tanks can sit inside or out; heat pumps need outdoor space with clear airflow and, ideally, a spot away from bedroom windows because the fan makes mild noise. Continuous flow gas units mount on an external wall with flue clearance. Relocating from the old position is often possible but adds pipework, so factor placement in before you choose.

[Talk through placement options](https://fixedtoday.com.au/contact-us)

### Compare running cost, not just sticker price

A cheap electric storage unit can cost $700 to $900 a year to run, while a heat pump can run for $200 to $350 a year. Over a 10 to 15 year life that gap often outweighs the higher upfront price, and rebates narrow it further. Always compare total cost of ownership, including any NSW ESS and federal STC rebate you qualify for.

Heat pump needs airflow clearance

Get an arrival estimate for your suburb

Enter your suburb or address; we’ll show typical travel time and current availability for new hot water install quotes in your area.

ETAs are estimates based on approximate zone data and typical traffic conditions. Actual times may vary depending on booking volume and scheduling.

## What changes when a licensed installer plans your new system?

Before vs After

A new hot water system is a 10 to 15 year decision, and it is one of the easiest jobs to get wrong on price alone. Here is exactly what shifts when a licensed Sydney installer plans and fits it, instead of a handyman or a like-for-like guess.

Side-by-side with what most homeowners actually receive when they pay $1,200 to $8,000 for a new hot water system; no spin, no fine print. Just what we include as standard on a supply-and-install, and what tends to quietly get left off elsewhere.

## How a new hot water install works in Sydney

How It Works

Same upfront supply-and-install pricing whether it is a straight swap, a first-time install in a renovation, or a strata upgrade. Here is exactly what to expect from the first call to the warranty card.

Every hot water install in Sydney is backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty plus the full manufacturer parts warranty; in writing, on your invoice.

Tell us about your home and what you want

Household size, current fuel (gas, electric, LPG, solar), where the unit sits, and what matters most; lowest running cost, biggest rebate, or lowest upfront. We use this to shortlist the right system types before we visit.

Free on-site assessment and sizing

A licensed installer checks placement, gas and electrical, flue clearances and roof aspect, then sizes the system from manufacturer tables for your peak demand; so the unit is neither undersized nor wasteful.

Options and running costs, in writing

You get itemised supply-and-install pricing for each suitable system, projected annual running cost, warranty length, and any NSW ESS and federal STC rebate you qualify for, pre-calculated. You decide; no upsell, no pressure.

Install, compliance and warranty paperwork

A typical storage install takes 2 to 3 hours; heat pump and solar can be a half-day. We remove and recycle the old unit, fit a compliant tempering valve, set the thermostat to 60°C, then email your compliance certificate and warranty card before we leave.

Old unit failed? Fast replacement install

If your existing unit has given out, we prioritise a same-day or next-day install so you’re not left with cold showers, and we still take the time to size the new system properly rather than just matching the old one.

Make it safe while we’re en route

If the old unit is leaking, we talk you through closing the cold inlet and isolating power or gas safely, so damage is contained before the installer arrives.

Right system on the truck, not just the cheapest

Common 50L to 315L electric and gas units are carried on the truck for fast turnarounds. Heat pump and solar systems are typically ordered and installed within a day or two so you still get the efficient option, not a rushed compromise.

New system in, fully warranted

Pressure tested, temperature set to 60°C tank / 50°C delivery, tempering valve fitted, rebate lodged, and compliance certificate filed with NSW Fair Trading.

Site review and access requirements

Strata, hospitality, gym, aged-care or commercial laundry? We coordinate with building management, lift bookings, and after-hours access ahead of the install.

Compliance and SWMS

Plumbing licence (305428C), gas licence, $10M public liability, SWMS and JSA documents prepared and supplied before we step on site; no chasing.

Scoped quote with three options

Like-for-like replacement, a right-sized upgrade, and an efficiency option (heat pump or solar) presented side by side with payback periods and rebates costed in.

Scheduled install around your operations

After-hours, staged, or weekend installs available. We handle disposal of the old unit and provide WHS sign-off and a compliance certificate for your records.

## Two warranties on your new system; both in writing, both honoured

Our Guarantee

Every hot water install is covered by our lifetime workmanship warranty on the install and the full manufacturer warranty on the new unit and parts. Both are explained in plain English on your invoice. No fine print, no exclusions you have to dig out of a PDF.

### Rebates Applied, Not Chased

## Licensed plumber vs. unlicensed worker

Why licensing matters

Plumbing work in NSW must be carried out by a licensed plumber. It is not just a formality, licensing protects your home, your insurance, and your right to recourse if something goes wrong.

Licensed plumber

Unlicensed worker

Most home insurance policies will not pay out for damage caused by unlicensed plumbing work. A burst hot water unit from a non-compliant install can void cover on the entire claim, often tens of thousands of dollars.

## How to choose a new hot water system you won’t regret

Buyer’s Handbook

A short editorial guide written by our senior hot water installers. No fluff, no brand bias; just the checks an experienced buyer makes before signing off on a new $4,000 system.

The six checks that matter most

Walk-away signs on a new-install quote

Six questions every buyer should ask

Verify a hot water installer’s licence yourself

Service NSW lets anyone verify a plumber’s contractor licence in under a minute; and a hot water install legally requires one. Bookmark the link: it is the single most useful tool a buyer has.

[Open the Fair Trading check](https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/check-tradesperson-or-contractor-licence)

[Get a transparent install quote](https://fixedtoday.com.au/contact-us)

### Size before brand; always

An undersized system will run cold every winter and fail years early; oversized wastes money heating water no one uses. The correct size is driven by household occupancy, peak simultaneous demand (showers + dishwasher), and recovery rate; not by what was there before. Most systems we replace were sized by guesswork, not by manufacturer tables.

Every quote shows the recommended capacity per system type, calculated from your household and Sydney peak-demand averages.

### Compare running cost, not just install price

A $1,200 electric storage unit can cost $900/year to run. A $4,500 heat pump can cost $250/year. Over a 12-year lifespan, that gap is roughly $7,800; nearly double the upfront difference. The real comparison is total cost of ownership, not the cheapest sticker.

Our quote shows installed price, projected annual running cost, and any rebate; side by side, on the same page.

### Confirm the rebate is locked in, not hoped for

There are two separate incentives on heat pumps and solar; the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (Hot Water Upgrade Incentive) administered by IPART, and federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) administered by the Clean Energy Regulator. Both depend on the unit being on the CER’s approved register, the installer being partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP), and a signed nomination form being lodged before work starts. “We’ll help you claim it later” is a red flag. Both amounts should appear as separate line-item deductions on your written quote, dated, before any work begins. Final value depends on your model, existing system and postcode.

We’re partnered with an ACP, deduct both NSW and federal rebates directly on the day where you qualify, lodge the paperwork ourselves, and only quote heat pumps that carry the required minimum 5-year warranty. You never wait, never claim.

### Demand a Certificate of Compliance, not a receipt

In NSW, every hot water installation must be issued with a Certificate of Compliance lodged with NSW Fair Trading. If your installer cannot produce one, the work is not legally compliant; your home insurance will not cover damage from it, and your buyer’s solicitor will flag it on resale.

Compliance certificate emailed before our installer leaves your driveway, and lodged with Fair Trading the same day.

### Check the tempering valve is in the quote

NSW law requires water to ablutions to be delivered at 50°C or lower, and AS/NZS 3500 governs the install. The tempering valve is what enforces that temperature, and it is rated for 5 years. A new-install quote that does not include a tempering valve is not compliant work.

Every install quote includes a new AS/NZS-compliant 50°C tempering valve, fitted and pressure-tested.

### Insist on itemised, not lump-sum

An itemised quote shows the unit cost, the labour, any pipework, the tempering valve, the old-unit disposal, the compliance certificate, and the GST. Lump sums hide cost-cutting; cheap valve, no flue clearance, dumped at the kerb. The detail is the protection.

Every quote is line-itemed, with manufacturer model numbers, so you can compare apples to apples between installers.

### Plan placement and controls to actually save money

Indoor vs outdoor placement affects pipe runs, noise and clearances; heat pumps in particular need clear airflow and are best kept away from bedroom windows. Set the thermostat to 60°C for safe storage and Legionella control. If you have solar PV, fit a timer and run the heat pump or electric booster during the sunniest part of the day so you heat water with free power instead of grid imports.

On every install we agree the best placement, set the thermostat to 60°C, configure the timer to your tariff or solar window, and walk you through clearances and fault codes before we leave.

No model number on the quoted unit

Rebate “applied later” with no figure on the quote

Sized the same as the old unit with no questions asked

No tempering valve line on the install

Compliance certificate as an optional extra

Running cost never mentioned, only install price

What size and brand are you quoting, and why?

A real answer cites your household size, the peak simultaneous demand of your home (e.g. "4 people, 2 showers running together"), the manufacturer’s sizing table, and a brand chosen for warranty length and parts availability; not just stock on hand.

Which system is cheapest to run, not just to install?

Ask for the projected annual running cost of each option alongside the install price. A heat pump or solar system often costs more upfront but far less to run; over 10 to 15 years the total cost of ownership can favour the more efficient system, especially with rebates applied.

Is the rebate calculated and deducted on the day, or do I claim later?

Look for both the NSW Hot Water Upgrade Incentive and the federal STC rebate to appear on the quote as separate dollar values, with the model’s STC code shown. Both should be deducted from the invoice on installation, subject to eligibility, and you should sign a nomination form before work begins. “You can claim it yourself” almost always means a long chase or a missed rebate.

Will I receive a Certificate of Compliance, and when?

Yes, every install; lodged with NSW Fair Trading by the installer, with a copy to you the same day. If an installer says “don’t worry about it” or “we’ll send it next week”, the work is unlikely to be compliant.

Is a new tempering valve included on the install?

On any tank or instant unit serving ablutions, yes; NSW law requires 50°C delivery via a tempering valve under AS/NZS 3500, and the valve is rated for 5 years. An install that omits it is non-compliant and a future failure point.

What is the manufacturer’s warranty, and who handles a claim?

Tank warranties range 5 to 10 years depending on brand; heat pump compressors up to 6 years. A reputable installer registers the warranty for you and handles the claim end-to-end if the unit fails; you should not have to negotiate with the manufacturer yourself.

## New hot water system questions, answered straight

FAQs

Direct answers to the questions our install customers ask most. If yours is not here, give us a call; we’ll tell you straight.

### Which hot water system is best for my home?

For most Sydney households a heat pump is the best balance: it uses up to 75% less energy than electric and attracts stacked NSW and federal rebates. Gas suits larger homes with a mains connection, electric is cheapest upfront, and solar is greenest if you have roof space. We size and recommend on-site.

### What size hot water system do I need?

The Sydney rule of thumb is 50 litres of stored capacity per person, or a 26L/min continuous flow unit for households of 4 or more. Use the sizing calculator on this page (jump to [hot water size calculator](#hot-water-size-calculator)) for a recommended size by system type; your installer confirms it on-site before fitting.

### Gas vs electric vs heat pump; what’s the real difference?

Electric is cheapest to install but dearest to run (about $700 to $900/yr). Gas recovers fast and runs $400 to $700/yr if you have mains gas. A heat pump costs more upfront but runs $200 to $350/yr and earns the biggest rebates, so it usually wins over a 10 to 15 year life.

### How much does it cost to install a new hot water system?

Indicative installed ranges for a typical Sydney home: electric $900 to $2,500, gas $1,400 to $3,500, heat pump $2,000 to $6,000, and solar $4,000 to $8,000. Where you qualify, NSW and federal rebates reduce heat pump and solar prices. We give you a fixed supply-and-install quote before any work.

### How long does a new hot water install take?

A like-for-like storage swap is typically 2 to 3 hours including draining and removing the old unit. Continuous flow gas is a similar half-day job. Heat pump and solar installs, and any fuel change or relocation, are usually a half to full day. We confirm the timeframe on your quote.

### Are heat pump and solar rebates available, and do you handle the paperwork?

Yes, where you qualify. The **NSW Hot Water Upgrade Incentive** (under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, administered by IPART) is up to **$640** replacing an electric heater with a heat pump, plus federal **STCs** worth roughly **$700 to $1,000**. We’re partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider, only quote units on the CER register, deduct both on the day, and lodge the paperwork ourselves.

[Quote with rebate applied](https://fixedtoday.com.au/contact-us)

### Can I install the new unit indoors, outdoors, or in a new spot?

Storage tanks can go indoors or out; continuous flow gas mounts on an external wall with flue clearance; heat pumps need outdoor space with clear airflow, ideally away from bedroom windows. Relocating from the old position is usually possible but adds pipework. We confirm the best placement on-site.

[Discuss placement](https://fixedtoday.com.au/contact-us)

### Is a tempering valve and compliance certificate included?

Yes. Every install includes a new AS/NZS 3500-compliant 50°C tempering valve and a Certificate of Compliance lodged with NSW Fair Trading. Both are mandatory in NSW and required for insurance and resale. We email your certificate the same day; there are no optional extras hiding compliance.

### Do you install in apartments and strata buildings?

Yes. We work with strata managers and building access requirements regularly. We can quote like-for-like or upgraded installs that meet body corporate rules, and we provide all SWMS, licence (305428C) and insurance documents required for sign-off.
