If the gas smell is strong, if you hear a hissing sound, or if anyone feels dizzy, nauseous or short of breath, treat it as a life-threatening emergency. **Do not** operate any electrical switch, phone or ignition source inside. Get everyone out immediately, and from a safe distance call **000** and your gas network’s 24-hour emergency line. Never try to find or trace a gas leak with a naked flame, a lighter, or by 'sniffing' at appliances. Leak detection is done with calibrated electronic detectors and leak-detection fluid by a licensed gas fitter; never with an ignition source.

### Turn the gas off at the meter, only if it is safe to reach

If your gas meter is easy and safe to get to, turn the main isolation valve a quarter-turn so the handle sits across the pipe (perpendicular = off). Open doors and windows on your way out to let the gas disperse and stop it building to a dangerous concentration. Do not turn on an exhaust fan or rangehood to “clear” it; the fan motor can create a spark. Just open up and keep moving toward the exit.

### Know what a gas leak smells like

Natural gas and LPG are both naturally odourless. Suppliers add a chemical called mercaptan to give that distinctive rotten-egg or sulphur smell, precisely so you can detect a leak. If you notice that smell, a hissing sound near a gas line or appliance, or a persistent pilot light that won’t stay lit, treat it as a possible leak; don’t talk yourself out of it.

On every callout we confirm whether it’s genuinely gas, using electronic detection, before any repair; so you’re never charged for a false alarm you couldn’t identify.

### Learn the difference: gas smell vs carbon monoxide

A gas leak you can usually smell. Carbon monoxide (CO) from a faulty or badly-ventilated gas appliance is the opposite; it is colourless and odourless, and the warning signs are physical: headaches, nausea, dizziness or drowsiness that ease when you leave the house. Older or poorly-serviced gas heaters are the common culprit. Both are dangerous, and both need a licensed gas fitter.

We test for CO around gas appliances as part of a safety inspection and flag any heater that’s producing it or venting poorly.

### Never hunt for a leak with a flame

The old trick of running a lighter along a pipe to “find” a leak is how homes catch fire. Never use a naked flame, a lighter, or even a light switch to locate gas. The safe home method is soapy water on a suspected joint (bubbles mean escaping gas) but the reliable method is a calibrated electronic detector in the hands of a licensed gas fitter.

We locate leaks with electronic detectors and leak-detection fluid, then confirm the whole installation is tight with a manometer pressure test.

### A pressure test is the only real proof

The smell disappearing doesn’t mean the leak is gone; ventilation can clear the air while gas keeps escaping. The only reliable proof a gas installation is sound is a manometer pressure test: the fitter pressurises the pipework and watches whether it holds over time. No pressure test, no proof.

Every gas repair we do ends with a documented pressure test, and we won’t sign off the job until the installation holds pressure.

### Insist on a Certificate of Compliance

In NSW, gas fitting work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter and certified. The Certificate of Compliance is your proof the work was legal and safe; it matters for your insurance, for resale, and for any warranty on the appliance. If someone “fixes” your gas without paperwork, you have no protection if it fails.

Are you a licensed gas fitter, and what’s your licence number?

Gas fitting in NSW is legally restricted to licensed gas fitters; there is no DIY or handyman exemption. A genuine tradesperson will give you a licence number without hesitation, and you can verify it free on the Service NSW website in under a minute.

How will you actually locate the leak?

The right answer mentions electronic gas detection and leak-detection fluid on joints, not “I’ll follow the smell”. Locating gas by smell alone routinely misses the real source, especially with leaks inside walls, under floors or at the meter.

Will you pressure test the installation afterwards?

Yes should be the answer, every time. A manometer pressure test is the only reliable proof the installation is tight after a repair. If a fitter is happy to leave just because the smell has gone, that’s a red flag.

Will I get a Certificate of Compliance for the gas work?

Every legal gas job in NSW should come with a Certificate of Compliance for the gas fitting work. It protects your insurance and resale position. “You don’t need one” means the work may not be compliant.

What happens if you can’t fully fix it today?

A safe fitter will isolate and tag the affected supply so nothing is left live, order the correct approved parts, and return to complete and re-test. You should never be left with an active, un-isolated gas leak.

Will you check my appliances and re-commission them safely?

After any gas line repair, each connected appliance should be checked for leaks and correct combustion, then safely re-lit and re-commissioned; not simply left off for you to sort out later.

### I can smell gas right now; what should I do?

Treat it as an emergency. Don’t touch any switches, phones or appliances inside; open doors and windows on your way out; turn off the gas at the meter only if it’s safe to reach; and get everyone outside. ### How quickly can you get to a gas leak?

We run a 24/7 on-call roster for gas emergencies. Typical arrival across Sydney is 30 to 55 minutes depending on your suburb and the time of day, and genuine gas smells are dispatched on priority ahead of routine work. ### How do you find a gas leak?

We don’t rely on smell. A licensed gas fitter uses a calibrated electronic gas detector to sweep the area, applies leak-detection fluid to joints and fittings (escaping gas forms bubbles), and runs a **manometer pressure test** across the whole installation to measure any pressure drop. That pinpoints the exact source; a fitting, an appliance connection, a corroded line or the meter; rather than guessing.

### Is it illegal to do my own gas work?

Yes. In NSW, gas fitting work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter; there is no DIY or handyman exemption. Unlicensed gas work is an offence, carries significant fines, and will usually void your home insurance if something goes wrong. ### What’s the difference between a gas leak and carbon monoxide?

A gas leak is unburnt gas escaping; you can usually smell the added mercaptan (rotten-egg odour). Carbon monoxide (CO) is a byproduct of gas that isn’t burning properly, and it is colourless and odourless. The warning signs of CO are physical; headaches, nausea, dizziness or drowsiness that ease when you leave the house; and it’s most often from old or poorly-ventilated heaters. Both are dangerous and both need a licensed gas fitter.

### Do you handle natural gas and LPG?

Yes; both. Whether you’re on mains natural gas or bottled LPG, our licensed gas fitters detect and repair leaks in lines, fittings, meters, regulators and appliances for both fuel types, and pressure test to the same AS/NZS 5601 standard.

### Will I get a compliance certificate?

### What does a gas leak repair cost?

It depends on the fault. A simple fitting or flexible-connector repair is modest; replacing a corroded run of gas line or repairing a leaking meter connection costs more. We give you an upfront price after locating the leak and before the repair starts, even on an after-hours callout; and standard bookings have a $0 call-out fee.
